Simon Jean-Joseph created quite a stir in France in 1998 season. A series of stunning performances in an elderly Subaru car put him on the verge of clinching the French Rally Championship, against opposition driving the latest state-of-the-art, two-wheel drive asphalt machinery. The 29-year-old from Martinique entered the final round facing a straight showdown with works driver Philippe Bugalski to decide the outcome of the title - and ultimately finished as runner-up. Jean-Josephs career began in his native Martinique in 1989 and between 1990 and 1997 he won 25 rallies in Martinique and Guadeloupe. His breakthrough in France came in 1993 when he stepped up to a Group A Ford Escort Cosworth. Competing on his first World Rally event, the Tour of Corsica, he was lying inside the top 10 before retiring. Jean-Joseph returned to the French Championship in 1997 at the wheel of a Group A Subaru Impreza and won the amateur title in the championship. His speed frequently embarrassed the more established drivers and he decided to mount a challenge for the full title in 1998.
