Alister McRae is proving
to be the next rallying sensation from the McRae family. Expertly following in the
footsteps of his father, five time British Champion Jimmy McRae and his brother, the 1995
World Rally Champion, Colin McRae. In a relatively short space of time, Alister has earned
the position as one of the world's top young rally drivers. Two following years he contested with S.B.G. Sport packed VW Golf Kit Car both in British and World Championship events. In total he scored six F2 victories, including three on the British Championship as well taking F2 honours in Portugal, Finland and Australia. Alister finished the 1998 season with a drive in the works Subaru Impreza on the Great Britain Rally, partnering his brother Colin. An amazing drive saw him running in second place, until an accident on the final day forced his retirement. In 1999, he joined the Hyundai Team full time, driving on 10 events of the Formula 2 Championship. He scored the teams maiden win on the 1999 Rallye de Portugal and second place on the Rally of New Zealand. He is extremely excited at the prospect of a full season as a works driver in the new Hyundai Accent World Rally car and going head to head with some of the best rally drivers in the world, including his brother, Colin. In 2000 Hyundai moved to the rallying´s highest level and results with the brand new car were not very good. He scored Hyundai´s first ever special stage win in New Zealand and placed 7th in Argentina. For the season 2001 he became team leader in Hyundai and finished a fine fourth place in his home event Rally Great Britain. For the season 2002 he moved to Mitsubishi. He placed fifth in Sweden,
but after that all went wrong. He was injured in a mountain bike accident before
Rally Sanremo, but started the event. He was withdrawn after the end of the
first leg due to his injuries. His
recovery took a lot of time and he missed the last three rounds of the
championship. Mitsubishi
decided to pull out of the 2003 World Rally Championship and For the season 2004 he was invited to drive one of the R -E- E World Rally Team´s Group N Subaru in the Production Car World Rally Championship series. |
