Howard Wilkinson bought him for £500,000 just before the March transfer deadline in 1989. In his first season he was voted supporters' player of the season and went on to chalk up over 200 appearances. He subsequently won the league championship medal with United, crowning a fine career which brought him England Under 21 and B caps.
